When I Finally Put Myself in the Photos

Golden Hour in Logan: A Utah Florist Branding Shoot in the Mountains

By Alison | The Floral Studio | Utah Wedding & Elopement Florist

I want to tell you about the evening I dragged two enormous floral installations into a field in Logan, Utah at golden hour and just sat in the middle of them and breathed.

It sounds dramatic. It was a little dramatic. And it was also one of the most creatively alive I have ever felt.

This was my branding shoot. The first time I have ever intentionally put myself in front of the camera alongside my work. And doing it in the mountains of northern Utah, in a wide open field with the Cache Valley stretching out behind me and the sun doing absolutely everything it possibly could to make the whole scene look like a painting, felt like the most honest representation of who I am and what The Floral Studio is actually about.

Why Logan, Utah

Logan sits in Cache Valley in northern Utah, cradled between mountain ranges that turn gold and green in summer in the most breathtaking way. It is the kind of landscape that makes you feel genuinely small and genuinely grateful at the same time.

I grew up loving Utah's mountains. There is something about wide open valley views with peaks rising on every side that feels deeply romantic to me, the same way an Italian hillside does, the same way a Cape Cod bluff does. It is that feeling of being somewhere that is so beautiful it almost does not feel real.

For a branding shoot I wanted a setting that felt completely honest to who I am. Not a studio. Not a curated interior. A real place, with real light, and flowers that looked like they belonged there completely.

Logan gave me all of that and more.

The Installations: What I Built and Why

I designed two freestanding floral installations for this shoot, each one draped in the most beautiful bright pink fabric that absolutely sang against the golden summer grass and mountain backdrop.

The palette was warm, joyful, and completely sun-soaked. Dahlias in every variety — pompom dahlias in terracotta and golden yellow, dinner plate dahlias in blush and peach, decorative dahlias in warm pink and mauve. Garden roses in the most gorgeous antique copper and blush tones, their layered petals catching the evening light in a way that made me stop and just stare for a moment. Sweet pea in soft pink trailing delicately through the whole arrangement. Ranunculus in warm peach and orange adding those beautiful layered petals. Carnations in blush and mauve giving that lush, full quality I love as a supporting bloom. Yellow wildflowers reaching upward from the top of each installation, that unexpected pop of brightness that tied the whole thing to the surrounding landscape.

And the pink fabric. Bright, almost electric, completely unexpected against the natural setting. I love a creative choice that surprises you. That pink against the golden summer field is one of my favorite things I have ever designed.

The two installations sat side by side in the field, slightly different in height and arrangement so they felt like companions rather than copies of each other. Between them, in the photos where I am kneeling in the grass holding a small hand tied bouquet of the same warm blooms, the whole scene looks like something from a dream.

I mean that in the best possible way. Because it was a dream. My dream, specifically. The one I have been building toward for three years.

What a Branding Shoot Actually Is and Why Every Florist Needs One

I want to talk about this for a second because I think it is something a lot of florists overlook, myself included for a really long time.

Your portfolio shows what you can do. Your branding shoot shows who you are.

Those are two completely different things and both of them matter enormously to the brides you most want to attract.

When a dream client lands on your website or your Instagram, she is not just looking at your flowers. She is looking at you. She is deciding whether she trusts you, whether she likes you, whether she can imagine you showing up on the most important day of her life and feeling completely at ease. That decision happens in seconds and it is driven as much by feeling as it is by portfolio.

A branding shoot gives you images that communicate your personality, your aesthetic, and your energy all at once. It puts a face and a feeling to the work. And when that shoot is done in a location and with a floral palette that is completely authentic to who you are, it becomes the most powerful marketing tool you have.

These photos from Logan are now some of the most used images across my website and social media. Not because they are the most technically perfect images I have ever taken. Because they feel the most like me.

The Bouquet

I also designed a small hand tied bouquet for myself to hold during the shoot and I want to talk about it because it was genuinely one of my favorite bouquets I have ever made.

Warm dahlias in terracotta and peach. Garden roses in antique copper and blush. Ranunculus in orange and warm yellow. Small wildflower stems reaching outward. Tied with long cream silk ribbon that trailed down over my hands.

It was loose and warm and completely garden-gathered in feeling. The kind of bouquet that looks like you picked it yourself on a summer evening walk through a field. Which, honestly, is kind of exactly what I did.

The Light

I have to talk about the light because it was extraordinary and I want you to understand that these photos are not filtered or edited to look this warm and golden. That is just what Logan, Utah looks like at golden hour in the summer.

The sun dropping behind the mountains to the west, the whole valley filling up with that honeyed amber glow, the pink fabric on the installations catching and reflecting it back — it created this genuinely cinematic quality that I could not have planned if I tried. The film grain quality of some of these images, that soft, nostalgic texture, is something I am completely obsessed with and I think it reflects something real about the way I want my brand to feel.

Warm. Golden. Alive. A little bit like a memory you want to keep forever.

What This Shoot Means For My Brand

This shoot was also me practicing something I talk about a lot but do not always find easy — showing up. Putting myself in the photos. Letting people see the face behind the flowers.

I am a florist. I spend most of my working life behind the arrangements rather than in front of them. And putting myself in the frame, sitting in a field in Logan surrounded by dahlias and garden roses with my hair down and the mountains behind me, felt vulnerable in the best possible way.

Because that is who The Floral Studio actually is. Not just beautiful arrangements sitting in beautiful places. But me, Alison, a person who grew up in her grandparents' garden and fell completely in love with flowers and has been building something with that love for three years and is now taking that something all the way to Italy.

This shoot was the first time I let that story be fully visible. And I am so glad I did.
